Struggling with motivation? This post is all about how to stay motivated as a stay at home mom.
Finding motivation as a stay at home mom isn’t always easy.
I have been a stay at home mom for more than 5 years now, and I have definitely dealt with a lack of motivation over the years. Motherhood is challenging (and tiring), but I hated feeling unproductive. Often, I felt like I wasn’t in control of my life and was just surviving, so I knew things had to change.
I have read, watched, and listened to tons of self help content and tried many things to become more productive, organized, and in control of my life. I have also found what tips work best for moms. In this post, I am sharing the best motivation tips for stay at home moms.

How To Stay Motivated As A Stay At Home Mom:
Stick To Schedules And Routines
The truth about “staying motivated” is that it’s not realistic. No person always feels motivated, so following schedules and routines is key. Schedule your days out and create routines that work with your life and schedule. People who follow routines are the people who give off the illusion that they are always motivated. In reality, they stick to schedules and follow routines.
Tips to create a stay at home mom routine:
- Know your schedule and the things you have to get done (appointments, school events, etc.)
- Make a list of daily tasks you do to keep your life in order (exercise, clean, cook, etc.)
- Create a daily to-do list that includes your appointments and everyday tasks (you will want to schedule your day out using a notes app, planner, or pen and paper.)
- Break your to-do list into three parts (morning, afternoon, and night.)
- Follow your morning, afternoon, and night schedule until they become routine.
Know Your Purpose
Please don’t fall into the trap of believing you are just a “stay at home mom”. Know that your role is important and extremely beneficial for your family. Although your work is unpaid, being a stay at home mom is still work and you have a purpose. Remind yourself why you chose to be a stay at home mom, and how it benefits your home life.
Write Everything Down
Write down why you chose to be a stay at home mom, the benefits, and any goals you have. When you start to feel unmotivated or in a rut, look at this list. The list will serve as a reminder and give you some motivation when you are feeling down. You could even look at it every day if you need to.
Plan, Plan, Plan
Plan for everything. If you want to stay on track and feel productive as a stay at home mom, you have to plan. Plan your days and stay on top of important events. Prepare for things in advance because life with little ones is hectic, so you always want to be one step ahead.
I plan every day out the night before, and I pack and prepare all the things I need for the next day from water bottles to outfits. This makes mom life much easier.
I use this daily planner notepad from Amazon, and I love it.
Priorities
Know your priorities. You cannot please everyone, so don’t even try. Know who and what your priorities are. More important, make sure that you are one of your top priorities. You will be a much better mom when you take care of yourself. Making yourself a priority is a must, so make time for self care and downtime.
Beware Of Scrolling
Scrolling social media is a huge time waster. I can’t count how many times I thought I would go on tik tok or Instagram for a few minutes, and the next thing you know, it’s been an hour. It is very easy to get lost in social media, so be mindful when using it. I set timers on all my social media apps to keep myself in check.
Set Goals
Goals give you something to look forward to and work at. Set goals for yourself and make a plan for how you will accomplish your goal. Your goal can be big or small. It could be to sleep earlier each night, go for more walks, or wake up before your kids.
Rest
Rest and take breaks when you need to. I know from experience that the quickest way to burn out is to overwork yourself and not listen to your body. You don’t need to be productive and on your A-game every single day (I’m pretty sure it’s impossible). Listen to your body and plan for some off days once in a while.
