This post is all about how to create the best summer routine for you and your kids.
Are you a mom looking for practical and fun summer routine ideas? I’ve got you covered. I am sharing fun ideas you can add to your summer routine, as well as, my summer schedule.
You can use these ideas to create your very own summer routine for you and your kids!
How do I get into a summer routine?
The best way to start a summer routine is to write it down. Write down what you want your summer routine to look like and in the order, in which you want to complete it. Keep your routine simple.
Put the routine that you wrote down somewhere you can easily view it (like your fridge). Keeping your routine in plain view will help you and your family remember it.
Do kids need structure in the summer?
According to Child Mind Institute, kids do best when they have structure and follow routines. Routines tell kids what to expect each day and help them feel safe.
As a mom of two, I can confirm that both of my children thrive when we follow routines, and our household runs smoother overall compared to when we don’t follow our routines.

Summer Routine Ideas:
Here are some fun and practical ideas to include in your summer routine.
1. Screen Free Time
Ok, I can’t be the only one whose kids only want to play games and watch shows on their tablets all day. Make sure to schedule time for them to play with their toys or just be bored and think of things to do on their own. This will inspire them to get creative and find new ways to entertain themselves.
My six-year-old is obsessed with these pattern blocks, and they keep her busy for hours.
My ten-year-old son loves making his own stories, and he loves these blank comic books!
2. Play Outside
Encourage your children to play outdoors. They can play basketball, soccer, tag, or any other fun outdoor activity they think of.
My son loves playing basketball and soccer, so I got these balls to keep him entertained this summer.
3. Art and Crafts
Bring out paper, glue, and markers, and let your kids make art and crafts!
Both of my kids had a blast painting these rocks last summer. They used them to decorate their desks.
4. Educational Work
Keep your children’s minds sharp over the summer by having them do workbooks for their grade level. This will keep the information they learned over the school year fresh and prepare them for the next grade they are entering.
There are tons of workbooks for all ages on Amazon. I am getting this one for my kids to practice their handwriting.
5. Visit The Library
Head to your local library and let your kids pick out books to read over summer break.
6. Go On A Nature Walk
Take your kids out for a nature walk, and enjoy some time outdoors as a family.
7. Go To The Park
What kid doesn’t love the park?! They can play, feed ducks, or run around and burn off some energy!
8. Have A Movie Day
Schedule a movie day once a week during the summer. Make some popcorn and break out your favorite movie day snacks to create an epic movie night at home!
9. Cook Something
Summer is the perfect time to teach your kids some new life skills. Invite your child into the kitchen and help them learn their way around.
10. Have A Picnic
Make some sandwiches and have a picnic in your backyard or at a park!
