Do you want to create the best evening routine for your kids? I am sharing all my tips to create the best night routine for kids in school!
Bedtime routines are everything in my home! When I follow a routine, I feel more organized and productive. Routines also let my kids know what they need to get done and keep them on track.
Seriously, establishing good routines is one of my favorite mom hacks to make parenting easier. Good routines also benefit children. According to WebMD, following a routine as a family helps children feel secure and sets them up for success socially and academically.
In this post, I am sharing my night routine with my kids, and tips to create your own!

The Best Night Routine For Kids In School:
Our night routine usually begins around 5:00 pm. My kids have an hour or so of free time after school to unwind and do the things they enjoy (which is usually playing video games, ha).
Empty Back Packs
I have my kids empty their backpacks each night and get them ready for the next day. This helps keep their backpacks tidy (all the stuff they bring home for school piles up quickly).
I’ll also glance at any paperwork they get to ensure there is nothing important I need to read or fill out.
Get Things Ready For The Next Day
Mornings with kids can be chaotic, so I highly recommend getting things ready the night before. This includes homework, packing lunches, refilling water bottles, filling out forms, and picking out clothes. Anything you and your kids can do the night before, do it! It will make the mornings so much easier!
Dinner
Time to eat!
Wash Up & Brush Teeth
After dinner, the kids will shower, floss, and brush.
15-minute Clean Up/Chores
Then it’s time to tidy up their room and do their chores. I find it easy to stay on top of messes by cleaning for 15 – 20 minutes every day. It helps keep messes in check and is less overwhelming for kids.
Quiet Time
An hour of quiet time before bed helps my kids calm down and transition into bedtime (without fuss). Some quiet time activities they do are coloring, drawing, reading, playing with toys, or listening to music. Sometimes they just want to talk about their day with me. I basically use this time to encourage them to do something calming (and get off their electronics).
Read For 15 Minutes
This is part of their nightly homework for school, but also a good way to get their eyes sleepy and ready for bed, ha!
Affirmations
I like to end the day on a positive note, so we like to say positive affirmations before bed, such as, I am kind, I am strong, I am loved, and any other affirmations they add. It’s fun, simple, and the kids look forward to it.
Bedtime
And finally… it’s time for bed, and you can have some much needed “me time”!
Bonus bedtime tip for older kids…
Have kids write in a gratitude journal before bed.
Journaling is a perfect way for children to wind down and focus on the positive parts of the day before falling asleep.
