How To Be An Organized Mom:
1. Make a plan and write it down
The first step to becoming more organized is to write down all the things you need to do. I find it easiest to take it month by month. At the beginning of each month, I add any appointments, birthdays, school events, and any other important dates to my calendar. You want to write down everything! This will serve as a visual reminder.
I use this fridge calendar, so my family can also view and keep track of important dates.
Next, you want to plan out each day. I recommend planning out each day the night before, so you can quickly look over your to-do list when you wake up. When making your daily to-do list, you will want to look at your calendar and make sure you add any important dates for that day to your daily list. Keeping a monthly and daily to-do list will help you remember all the things you need to do and stay organized.
I use this daily planner notepad to write my daily to-do list.
2. Set up and follow a routine
Routines are a busy mom’s best friend. Set up and follow routines that work for you and your family. Having routines in place will take the guesswork out of each day and make it easy to stay consistent. Following a routine will also help your children know what is expected of them each day. For example, if every time your kids get home from school, their routine is to hang up their backpacks, eat a snack, and start their homework they will get in the habit of doing those things on their own. This is the main reason I swear by routines. They make mom life so much easier.
Here is an example of my morning routine with kids:
7:30 am – wake up and stretch for 5 minutes
7:35 am – wash up and get dressed
7:55 am – wake up kids
8:00 am – kids use the bathroom, get dressed, and brush their teeth while I make breakfast
8:15 am – eat breakfast
8:30 am – I do everyone’s hair
8:45 am – put on shoes, kids put on their backpacks, I grab my keys and we leave for school drop off
This morning routine is now a habit for my kids, and they know exactly what to do when they wake up each day. Following simple daily routines will help your days go a whole lot smoother.
3. Prepare the night before
The mornings can be total chaos when you have kids. Get as many things as you can ready the night before. Preparing the night before (when you’re not in a time crunch) will make your mornings run smoother.
Things you can do the night before:
- pack lunches
- fill up water bottles
- pick out outfits
- iron clothes
- set purse, backpacks, and keys by the door
- have shoes together and ready to put on
4. Know your priorities
Prioritize what’s important. Don’t overextend yourself and take on more than you can handle. When you take on too many things, you will inevitably feel stressed and overwhelmed. Try to find a good balance with some downtime included. You don’t have to say yes to every engagement or sign your kids up for every activity. Trust me, you will be more productive if you take on what you can handle and say no to things you truly don’t have time for.
5. Teach kids how to help themselves
Teach kids how to be independent and help themselves. I taught my kids early on to pick up after themselves, put away toys, and do age-appropriate chores. Of course, they still need to be reminded at times, but teaching them to pick up after themselves and help out around the house early on will set them up with good habits for the future.
Becoming an organized mom may seem hard, but if you make a plan, find a routine that works for you, and keep your priorities in mind you will be on the right path. You will feel more productive and in control of your time. You got this!
