A good morning routine can set you up for a successful day. Start paying attention to your morning habits, and see the difference a morning routine can make in your life.
I am not a morning person, but when I started following a mindful morning routine checklist, I noticed my mornings improved. I no longer spend my mornings rushed and stressed. Instead, I look forward to my mornings, and they run smoothly (even with two kids).

What should your morning routine be?
Your morning routine must be tailored to your lifestyle and what makes you feel good. Everyone’s morning routine will look a little different, but these are three things every person needs in their morning routine.
- Get the best rest possible – 8 hours of sleep (the recommended amount) is not possible for everyone, but you should make sleep a priority, and try to get as close to 8 hours as possible.
- Wake up on time – Try to wake up with your first alarm. This will ensure you are not late, and it will give you enough time to complete your morning routine.
- Self-care – Every morning should start with a simple self-care act. This can be stretching, standing in the sun, meditating, praying, journaling, etc. Doing one small self-care act first thing in the morning will help fill your cup, and start the day on a positive note.
These three things will help you start your morning routine the right way. Now, let’s go over more morning routine ideas, and how to create the perfect morning routine checklist.
How do I organize my morning routine?
You will plan your morning routine by writing it down on paper or on your phone. You should write your morning routine down in the exact order you want to follow it. Writing your morning routine down will help you stay on track and stick to your routine.
Here is how I organize my morning routine:
7:30 am – wake up, turn the alarm off, and wash up (brush teeth, wash face, etc.) |
7:45 am – stretch (3 minutes), meditate (5 minutes), write in my gratitude journal (5 minutes), drink water |
8:00 am – make breakfast for kids and get ready while they eat |
8:30 am – help my kids do their hair |
8:40 am – walk kids to school |
9:00 am – return home, eat breakfast, and drink coffee |
9:30 am – say positive affirmations and start my day |
This is my go-to routine to start my day positively, practice self-care, and move my body first thing in the morning.
You can plan your morning routine just like this, with the morning habits that work for you. Read below for morning routine ideas to add to your checklist.
Morning Routine Ideas To Add To Your Checklist:
No phone in the morning
Avoid going on your phone as soon as you wake up. It is tempting to check your email and socials first thing in the morning, but it is also overwhelming and time-consuming.
You don’t allow yourself a chance to start your day with your own thoughts and feelings when you start consuming news, emails, and social statuses as soon as you open your eyes.
Instead, take this time to slowly wake up, nourish yourself, and set your intentions for the day.
If you find it hard to avoid scrolling through your phone in the morning, try placing your phone further away from you when you sleep (at least out of arm’s reach). You can use a traditional alarm to wake up instead of your phone.
I love how simple and cute this clock is.
Schedule a few minutes of silence
As a mom of two, I have woken up many times abruptly and had to jump up and start my day as soon as I opened my eyes. If you have ever woken up to a crying baby (or toddler) that you have to feed, change, and clean you know the feeling.
The days I woke up like that I felt terrible. This is how I learned the importance of having a few moments of silence first thing in the morning. Every morning I make it my mission to sit in silence for at least 5 minutes in the morning.
Scheduling silence in your morning routine means you will have to wake up a few minutes before your kids, but it is so worth it to wake up in peace. I try to wake up at least 10 minutes before my kids, so I can wake up slowly, use the bathroom, and wash up before they are awake.
Sitting in silence has helped me start my day feeling calm, positive, and unrushed.
Do something that nourishes you
Try adding one small self-care act to your morning routine to fill your cup. This can be journaling, meditating, stretching, praying, or drinking a cup of your favorite tea or coffee.
Doing one small self-care act in the morning will give you something to look forward to and make you feel good. Remember self-care is just doing something to take care of yourself. So, make it a priority to do one thing that makes you feel cared for in the morning to improve your daily routine.

Eat a nutritious and tasty breakfast
Eat a nutritious breakfast. I love making overnight oats with chia seeds for the week. Making my breakfast ahead of time is a huge time saver, and it makes my morning easier.
Journal
Add journaling to your morning routine to set your intentions for the day, or to express gratitude. Journaling in the morning helps me start my day with purpose and a positive mindset. I like to write in a gratitude journal.
I use this gratitude journal and I love it.
Go for a walk
Adding a morning walk to your daily routine is an excellent way to get sun, fresh air, and a little exercise. I walk my kids to school during the week to get my morning steps in. I find it helps me feel more energized and awake compared to the days I don’t.
Practice positive affirmations
Positive affirmations are a game changer. Practice saying positive affirmations out loud each morning to help boost your confidence and start your day with positive thoughts.
We spend way too much time speaking negatively about ourselves, and it is time to stop. Instead, practice speaking positive thoughts and uplifting yourself with kind and loving words.
My favorite morning affirmations are: I love myself, I believe in myself, I trust myself, I can do anything, and I am unstoppable.
I strongly believe in positive affirmations they have helped me become more intentional with my words and stop the negative self-talk. This is a must to include in a successful morning routine.

Things to remember when creating your morning routine checklist…
- Give yourself enough time to complete your morning routine. A morning routine can be whatever you make it, it can be 15 minutes, or it can be over an hour, it comes down to how much time you have. Try to make it a priority, and give yourself enough time to complete it so that you can start your day feeling your best.
- Create a morning routine that you look forward to. This may be one of the most important tips. Ensure your morning routine brings you joy and peace. You should wake up each morning excited to start your daily routine.
- Try different ideas and customize your morning routine. Use this morning routine checklist as a guide to create your morning routine, but keep in mind that different things work for different people. You have to pay attention to what morning habits make you feel good and work for you, so you know what morning habits to keep in your routine.
- Last, but not least, you have to write your morning routine down in a place where you can easily view it. You could hang it on your bathroom mirror or take a picture of it and save it as your screen saver. Having your morning checklist in plain view will remind you to do it until it becomes a habit.
